The library continues its Let’s Talk About It book discussion series, sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council. The theme this time is: Points of View: Understanding Islamic Culture Through Memoirs and Fictional Works. We are very fortunate to have Jo Radner and Sue Lanser leading the discussions.
This month we will discuss the final selection in this series, Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood by Fatima Mernissi. Mernissi brings to life her girlhood in Morocco during the 1940s and meditates on a society in flux. Through a series of vignettes, we meet a delightful array of Fatima’s friends and family and follow the narrator’s emergence from the “rule of difference” in her formative- and transformative- years.
Coming up:
June 10: Persuasion by Jane Austen
July 8: The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
August 12: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
The Book Discussion Group welcomes all members of the greater Lovell community. If you’d like to join the group’s email list, please contact Sue at lanser@brandeis.edu.
