The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.
If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

COLORFUL STORIES FOR OCTOBER
The Hobbs Story Swap theme this month is very flexible – COLOR!
This could take us anywhere. Autumn colors, of course (though muted, this dry year), so, anything related to the fall. But just free-associate! Painting and interior decoration. Opinion (our ideas are colored by…). Joseph’s coat of many colors. Our experiences of race and racism. Colorful characters. Childhood (or adult) coloring books. Colorlessness; seeing in black and white. Coloring within the lines. So many metaphors!
This month we return to our usual Wednesday meeting day: Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1:00-2:30pm EDT.
Bring your stories and memories of COLOR to our online gathering. Can’t wait to hear what comes up! FMI or to receive the Zoom link, contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu).

The House at Schumannstrasse 7 is a story about Alice and Heinrch, Jewish-Germans, who were caught between two countries, two world wars and the politics of identity. In 1915, the British imprisoned Heinrich because he was German. In 1938, Nazis sent him to Dachau, where he was tortured and released. He sought sanctuary in England. The British imprisoned him. Alice fled Germany by “sealed train” a short-lived, but live-saving service.

HOBBS STORY SWAP RESUMES, “WET OR DRY,” ON SEPT. 15
It’s been (so far) a very dry season – the inspiration for our story theme for September as we come back together to swap tales after our summer break. What stories does “Dry” bring to mind? Droughts? Humor? Laundry? Thirst? And how about “Wet”? Some think of hurricanes and floods, some of the relief of swimming on a scorching day. Free associate on one or both of these words, see what memories (or traditional or historical tales) come to mind, and join us online from 1:00-2:30 pm EDT on Monday, September 15, to share your story and/or listen to others.
For more information or to receive the Zoom link, contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu).

Dogs! Bring your humans to celebrate the end of summer!

Then come to the library for a pup-cup (there will be ice cream for humans, too) and an option to make a dog-lick painting.
Join us to watch the new “Lilo & Stitch” movie (2025). A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, this is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.

In this slide/lecture program, we will take an ecological look at Autumn in the North Woods. Our adventure begins at the summit of Mount Washington, where man has been able to adapt in order to survive some of the most severe weather ever recorded. We'll then descend into the forest and valley below to take a closer look at some of the wildlife that calls New Hampshire home, as well as an overview of the spectacular fall colors. What strategies are adopted to survive the drastic changes in New England's seasons, and how birds, mammals, and plants are shaped by this northern environment will be some of the questions answered. The Mount Washington Valley provides the scenic backdrop as we take this fascinating closer look at Autumn. Held at Hobbs Library.

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. Please note the atypical day for this meeting! We will be discussing Virginia Woolf’s modernist classic The Waves (1931), the most experimental and most lyrical of her novels. This will be a hybrid gathering on Zoom and in the library's Community Room.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday of each month.
