Beginning in March, pin numbers, in addition to library card numbers, will be required for placing holds in the online catalogue. That means library staff will not be able to place holds for you unless they have your pin number. So! If you’ve been relying on staff to place your holds, or you’d just like to get a bit more nimble at it, or you want to learn a few tricks of the trade, join us for one of these info sessions! While we’re at it, we’ll explore how to get ebooks and e-audiobooks from the Cloud Library. Bring your questions!

Both sessions will be held in-person at the library as well as on Zoom.

Page Turners Book Discussion

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join

Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. In February we will be finishing our

reading and discussion of Stendhal's brilliant classic The Charterhouse of Parma (1839), a

novel of the Italy in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars that brings together the young

and sensitive Fabrice, his magnetic aunt Gina, the Duchess Sanseverina, and the powerful

Count Mosca, in a plot of romantic and political intrigue. Print copies and audio versions

are widely available, and the entire text in English translation can be found at this site.

In March, Page Turners will begin a new thread focusing on Israel/Palestine. Our

opening book for this discussion is journalist Sandy Tolan's widely acclaimed and widely

available The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East (2006). Be

sure to find the full-length version and not the shorter publication abridged for young

adults!

Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background

information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser

(925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or

wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday

of each month.

“FIRST JOB” at the Feb. 11 Hobbs Story Swap

Here’s a story theme that can draw on so many kinds of tales – myths, folktales, personal memories. Ol’ Jack goes off from home and finds a job – so many stories about that! Myths about labors of the gods. And then, personal memories. What was your very first job, and how did you get it? Or was there a transition in your life that made you start something anew? Or have you helped someone else (a child, a new hire) adapt to a new work challenge? Feel free to treat this theme in any way – or, if you prefer, bring another story you really want to tell.

See you on Wednesday, February 11, 1:00-2:30 pm ET. FMI or for the zoom link, contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu).

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

Join on Zoom

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

“RESIST!” with the Hobbs Story Swap

What a timely theme! “Resist!” reaches into our past histories and into our present, draws on memories, personalities, and intentions. Join us online to share and listen to all sorts of stories of resistance. Remember a time when you didn’t do what your parents thought you should? (Or a time when your own family members went their own way, obstinately?) Remember how hard it was to train a pet? Remember how you – or your neighbors and friends – acted during the Vietnam War? Or perhaps a time when you wanted to rise to a challenge – but resisted (a diet, an exercise program, a super-hard task...)? What are you resisting these days, and how? Some resistance is successful, some not. Let your memories range over time and bring us your stories!

The Hobbs Swap will meet online on Wednesday, January 21, from 1:00-2:30 EST. FMI or for the zoom link, contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu).

Getting the Books You Want: Searching Minerva, Mainecat, and the Cloud Library

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Beginning in March, pin numbers, in addition to library card numbers, will be required for placing holds in the online catalogue. That means library staff will not be able to place holds for you unless they have your pin number. So! If you’ve been relying on staff to place your holds, or you’d just like to get a bit more nimble at it, or you want to learn a few tricks of the trade, join us for one of these info sessions! While we’re at it, we’ll explore how to get ebooks and e-audiobooks from the Cloud Library. Bring your questions!

Both sessions will be held in-person at the library as well as on Zoom.

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. In January and February we are diving into Stendhal’s brilliant classic The Charterhouse of Parma (1839), a novel of the Italy in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars that brings together the young and sensitive Fabrice, his magnetic aunt Gina, the Duchess Sanseverina, and the powerful Count Mosca, in a plot of romantic and political intrigue. In addition to print copies, you an find the entire text in English translation at this site.

Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday of each month.

Writing Group

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)
