Unbound & Unstuck: A Mixed-Media Collage Workshop
May

5:30 PM17:30

Unbound & Unstuck: A Mixed-Media Collage Workshop

Rediscover the art of "play" in this hands-on workshop with Meredith from Studio 22. Whether you're an experienced maker or haven't touched a pair of scissors since grade school, this session moves beyond simple cut-and-paste to explore collage as a sophisticated medium for storytelling and texture. We will cover basic gluing techniques, assemblage and different collage styles. Collage is the ultimate "low-pressure" art form. There is no "undo" button, only the opportunity to layer over and transform. It’s an excellent way to bypass creative blocks and practice this fun medium! Lots of materials will be at your disposal: papers, small 3-D objects, yarn, string, fabric and more! This workshop is for ages 10+.

This class is FREE but space is limited. Register by using the form below or call (207) 925-3177.

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Mel Allen Presents: Listening to New England

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)

“Listening to New England,” is a 45 minute talk with PowerPoint images by Mel Allen. Drawing from Allen’s nearly half century of reporting and writing about the unique people and places of New England for Yankee magazine. He will let you see and feel the region in a unique way. Along the way he will talk about Yankee’s past and how it has survived for 90 years since its founding in 1935. After the talk, Allen will answer questions and meet with audience members who wish to have him inscribe copies of his new book-Here in New England: Unforgettable people, places and memories that connect us all. Allen describes the book this way: “In Mystic Seaport in Connecticut there is an exquisite scale model of Mystic in the mid-19th century.  Arthur Payne worked on that scale model for more than 50 years. If you lean down and see it at eye level, it seems as if the whole town he has created comes to life—people working, playing, ships loading or unloading. I see the stories in these pages a little like that—miniature pictures of New England that reveal a larger life around them. To tell these stories, I have entered the lives of people for hours or days—and when they open their own lives, their hearts, the words they speak become intimate albums. They tell me details of their lives that they may not tell anyone else. And it is up to me to treat those words with deep respect.”
The most important words in this book’s title for me are “that connects us all.” We live now in a time where division has become the backdrop to our lives. But when Allen looks at the stories here about people overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, of others reaching out to help their neighbors, of entire communities pulling together when all seems lost, or of thousands of people searching a wilderness for a lost child, he sees a common humanity that has always been part of the New England landscape.

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Writing Group

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

“INNOCENCE” at the Hobbs Story Swap

At the April meeting of the Hobbs Story Swap we’ll be exchanging stories on the very rich theme of INNOCENCE. It’s a good folktale theme: the simple hero who goes off to find a fortune and has adventures along the way. And in our own lives we have many “innocence” moments, unfortunate and fortunate. Perhaps we’ve been deceived. Perhaps we’ve been falsely accused and then proven blameless. Perhaps our innocence has led us to clean-hearted acts of generosity and forgiveness. Is innocence a virtue, a fault, a vulnerability, or a combination? Come share your stories and memories.

This month we meet online on THURSDAY, APRIL 16, from 1:00-2:30 pm EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) FMI or for the zoom link.

Page Turners Book Discussion

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. In April, we will be discussing Dancing Arabs (2002) by acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Sayed Kashua, the coming-of-age story of a Palestinian boy growing up in Israel and especially his journey from the Arab town of Tira to a prestigious and primarily Jewish prep school in Jerusalem. We will follow Dancing Arabs in May with a discussion of Anglo-Palestinian writer Isabella Hammad’s 2024 novel Enter Ghost. And in June, we reach back to Victorian England to read Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), a daring novel by the least known of the Brontë sisters.

Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday of each month on Zoom.

Nature-Writing Workshop with Andrea Lani

Pay Attention. Be Astonished. Tell About It: A Nature Writing Workshop

In her poem "Sometimes," Mary Oliver offers the following "Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it." What would it mean for us to live this way in a world characterized by digital distractions, cynical detachment, and artificial intelligence? What if, instead of endless doomscrolling, we allowed ourselves to fully focus on a flower, find wonder in a raindrop, and shout about the miracle of a mountain? Join author and Maine Master Naturalist Andrea Lani for an afternoon of practicing these principles as we craft nature-inspired poetry and prose. During this three-hour workshop, we’ll give ourselves permission to tune out the static and noise of the modern world and instead listen to what nature is telling us. Using established nature writers and poets as our guides, we’ll practice paying close attention, re-energize our astonishment muscles, and play with language to help us best convey our own delight in the world. Participants will come away with the starts of several pieces of writing and a range of prompts and writing exercise that can be used any time. Writers of poetry, fiction, or nonfiction with any level of experience are welcome.

Andrea Lani is the author of Uphill Both Ways: Hiking toward Happiness on the Colorado Trail, and a multitude of essays about nature and family that have appeared in a range of journals and anthologies, most recently Echoes in the Fog: Literary Reflections on the Liminal Spaces of Maine's Coast. Andrea is a graduate of College of the Atlantic and the Stonecoast MFA Program, she’s an active Maine Master Naturalist, and she teaches nature writing and nature journaling around the state. Find her online at www.andrealani.com and andreaelani.substack.com

Writing Group

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)
