The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.
If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

“Listening to New England,” is a 45 minute talk with PowerPoint images by Mel Allen. Drawing from Allen’s nearly half century of reporting and writing about the unique people and places of New England for Yankee magazine. He will let you see and feel the region in a unique way. Along the way he will talk about Yankee’s past and how it has survived for 90 years since its founding in 1935. After the talk, Allen will answer questions and meet with audience members who wish to have him inscribe copies of his new book-Here in New England: Unforgettable people, places and memories that connect us all. Allen describes the book this way: “In Mystic Seaport in Connecticut there is an exquisite scale model of Mystic in the mid-19th century. Arthur Payne worked on that scale model for more than 50 years. If you lean down and see it at eye level, it seems as if the whole town he has created comes to life—people working, playing, ships loading or unloading. I see the stories in these pages a little like that—miniature pictures of New England that reveal a larger life around them. To tell these stories, I have entered the lives of people for hours or days—and when they open their own lives, their hearts, the words they speak become intimate albums. They tell me details of their lives that they may not tell anyone else. And it is up to me to treat those words with deep respect.”
The most important words in this book’s title for me are “that connects us all.” We live now in a time where division has become the backdrop to our lives. But when Allen looks at the stories here about people overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, of others reaching out to help their neighbors, of entire communities pulling together when all seems lost, or of thousands of people searching a wilderness for a lost child, he sees a common humanity that has always been part of the New England landscape.

In this last meeting before its summer break, the Hobbs Story Swap will play with the themes VACATING and VACATION.
VACATING? think of running away from something or someplace; emptying a home or an attic; or any other kind of emptying. And VACATION? often the scene of delights or disasters that make engaging stories – or maybe a tale of hope for refreshment in another place, fulfilled or not. How about a traveling adventure, a challenge on alien turf, or a threat that made you VACATE in a hurry!
Take one theme or another (or feel free to ignore both) – just come and tell and/or listen and celebrate the onset of summer. We will meet online on Wednesday, June 24, at a new time: from 2:00-3:30 pm EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) FMI or for the zoom link.

Writing Group members’ blogs:
Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)
Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)

The Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention (MCEAP) has developed a presentation titled Elder Abuse: A Community Problem with Community Solutions to raise awareness of the serious problem of elder abuse. MCEAP’s goal for this presentation is to provide an overview of the issue of elder abuse including statistics, general information about the different types of elder abuse, and where to go for help. Although the presentation includes information about the many valuable resources that are available in Maine to help those who are affected by elder abuse, it does not provide profession-specific content or information about legal reporting mandates.

I recently moved to Maine, and am looking to connect with the community and teach people the easiest and best way to lose weight, tone up and improve their energy. I've helped 3000+ clients of all ages to see results and reach their goals, and I am excited to connect with new people in Maine. My youngest client is 7 years old, and my oldest client is 97 years old. No matter what your age is, I can help you with your goals! I specialize in metabolism, energy pathways, and balancing hormones through exercise to reach optimal health and fitness no matter what your age is.
Writing Group members’ blogs:
Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

In this exercise class, you will learn which exercises to do, to maximize your results while minimizing the risk of injury. 1:1 private training can be expensive, while large classes can be difficult for people to learn. Small group personal training is the best of both worlds, as its less expensive than 1:1 training, while still maintaining the boutique feeling of personal training sessions. Come ready to exercise!

May Story Swap Features KEEPSAKES
The Hobbs Story Swap this month will feature a KEEPSAKES GALLERY. Bring some item from your life that you have kept because it has meaning for you; show it to us (online) and tell us a story about its significance. Your keepsake can be anything: a piece of art, a stone or a shell, a photo, a tool, an article of clothing or jewelry – anything, so long as you can tell us a story that it evokes. Look around at all the memories embedded in your world!
We will meet online on Wednesday, May 20, at a new time: from 2:00-3:30 pm EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) FMI or for the zoom link.

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. In May, we will be discussing Isabella Hammad’s 2023 novel Enter Ghost, whose Palestinian cast is attempting to stage Hamlet in the West Bank. In June, we reach back to Victorian England to read Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), a daring novel by the least known of the Brontë sisters.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday of each month.

Description:
Learn how to exercise properly for weight loss, muscle toning, increased energy and stamina. Weight loss can be difficult to navigate, mainly due to conflicting voices, methods, and opinions in the health industry.
