All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join the Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. We are currently meeting online.
In April we will conclude our discussion of Hilary Mantel’s long novel of the French Revolution, A Place of Greater Safety (1992). This novel by the author of the award-winning Wolf Hall trilogy can readily be found through Minerva, on Kindle, or in paperback. In May, the Page Turners will focus on the Haitian Revolution and the age of Napoleon through a new novel, Désirée Congo, by the Haitian author Evelyne Trouillot. Set in the period leading up to the last battle with French forces for the independence of Saint-Domingue, Désirée Congo introduces us to a broad array of fictional and historical characters. Readers of French can acquire the novel in the original language; most of us will be reading the new English translation in draft and advising the translator of any needed alternations. Please contact Sue Lanser for a copy of the English text. For our June meeting we will be reading Virginia Woolf’s modernist novel To the Lighthouse (1927).
Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, at which you can receive advance background information and questions in preparation for our discussions. If you would like further information about this group or wish to attend an upcoming meeting, please contact Sue Lanser at lanser@brandeis.edu or 925-6244.
