All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join the Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. We are currently meeting online.
Our selection for July is Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel North and South (1855), set in the heart of industrial England as mill workers begin to organize against exploitative conditions. Through the eyes of the protagonist Margaret Hale, a transplant from London who sympathizes with the workers but is also attracted to the mill owner, we confront the political and class divides between England’s north and south. The novel is available from Project Gutenberg, on Kindle, through Minerva, or in numerous paperback editions. Our selection for Monday, August 8 will be Kazuo Ishiguro’s newest novel, Klara and the Sun. On September 12 we turn to Absalom, Absalom! (1936), often considered William Faulkner’s greatest work.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, at which you can receive advance background information and questions in preparation for our discussions. If you would like further information about this group or wish to attend an upcoming meeting, please contact Sue Lanser at lanser@brandeis.edu or 925-6244.
