All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. In August we will meet on zoom or in person at the library. In keeping with our usual summer practice, we’ll be reading a classic novel in July and a contemporary work in August.
On Monday, August 14, we will turn to the “autofiction”; of the 2022 Nobel laureate, Annie Ernaux, considered France’s greatest living writer. Our focal text will be Ernaux’s acclaimed memoir The Years (Les Années, 2008), which recounts the author’s life from childhood through mature age while also tracing the collective life of France from the traumas of the Second World War to the tumultuous and transformative sixties through the political ferments of the new century. We’ll also read a very short and moving text in the form of a letter from Ernaux to the sister who died before she was born. The Years is available through Minerva as well as in paperback, Kindle, and audio.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, through which you can receive advance background information and preparatory discussion questions. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like further information about the group or wish to join our mailing list.
