Page Turners Book Discussion

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library 227 Main Street Lovell, ME 04051 United States (map)

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group, which meets at 1:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Currently we are meeting on Zoom.

Our next four sessions will be devoted to an exploration of eighteenth-century novels in historical context. On February 12 we will be discussing Daniel Defoe’s classic Moll Flanders (1721), widely available in print and through Project Gutenberg. A rogue figure who is born in Newgate Prison, survives by hook and crook, and ends up a rich plantation owner in Virginia, Moll is one of the most fascinating characters to emerge from the early English novel. After exploring mid-century culture through short readings

in March, we will turn in April to Choderlos de Laclos's 1782 tour de force, Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Acquaintances), and in May to the anonymous novel The Woman of Colour (1808) in tandem with Jane Austen's Sanditon, left unfinished at her death.

Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, through which you can receive advance background information and preparatory discussion questions. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like further information about the group or wish to join ur mailing list.
