All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group, which meets at 1:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Currently we are meeting on Zoom.
Our next three sessions continue our exploration of eighteenth-century novels in historical context. We’ll have a multimedia set of texts for our meeting on March 11 (contact Sue Lanser for links): a deep look at William Hogarth's 1743 series of paintings, “Marriage à la Mode” an introduction to London’s Foundling Hospital and its role in creating a culture of public philanthropy, and the first volume of Laurence Sterne's witty and out-of-the-box novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759). We will turn on April 1 to a discussion of Choderlos de Laclos’s 1782 tour de force, Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Acquaintances), and in May to the anonymous novel The Woman of Colour (1808) in tandem with Jane Austen's Sanditon, left unfinished at her death.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, through which you can receive advance background information and preparatory discussion questions. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like further information about the group or wish to join our mailing list.
