All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join the Page Turners, the Library’s afternoon book discussion group. Our series on new Americans will continue in May and June. On May 10 we will be discussing Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019), a novel about a Vietnamese immigrant family in Hartford, CT that has been widely praised for its luminous writing and its powerful, painful story. Copies of Vuong’s novel are available through Minerva as well as for purchase in print and E-book formats. This session will take place on zoom. Our selection for June has changed. On June 14, we will be discussing Abdi Nor Iftin’s memoir, Call Me American (2018), a stirring narrative of Iftin’s experiences of war, famine, and struggle in his native Somalia and of his efforts to emigrate to the United States. Iftin, who lives in Maine, is the featured speaker for the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library’s annual meeting on June 23, so we have amended our schedule in order to read his book. A number of extra copies of Call Me American are available for borrowing now; the book is also available for purchase in paperback as well as electronically. It has not yet been decided whether our June meeting will take place online or in a hybrid format.
