In this course, geared for adults, students will delve into the intricate workings of the U.S. government, beginning with an exploration of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. We will cover the specific functions, powers, limitations, and the crucial system of checks and balances that ensures no single branch becomes too powerful. Moving on, students will examine the concept of taxes, understanding who contributes what and how these funds finance various government programs. The course will also cover gerrymandering, a practice where electoral boundaries are manipulated to favor a particular party, influencing election outcomes. Additionally, we will learn about the debt ceiling and its implications. Finally, they will explore the purpose and function of the Electoral College in U.S. presidential elections, gaining insight into its role in the democratic process.
