Speaker Series

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library 227 Main Street Lovell, ME 04051 United States (map)

Leigh Hayes wrote and Solana Ward illustrated, The Giant’s Shower. They will discuss their book and create fairy houses with all who attend on August 15 at 4:00. Leigh is a Maine Naturalist and retired Education Coordinator for Greater Lovell Land Trust. Solana just graduated from high school.

You and your children will delight in the story accompanied by the colorful and whimsical illustrations created by artist Solana Ward.

A naturalist and writer, Leigh hikes frequently in Maine and New Hampshire, and those adventures inspired this story. She feels the fairies’ magic whenever she’s among moss-covered ground and tree stumps.

This is a story that sat on her desk for many years, but once she spied a fairy coloring book created by Solana and on sale at her family’s Fly Away Farm shop in Lovell, Leigh knew she needed to ask the teenager to illustrate the tale. And with that, The Giant’s Shower sprang to life. Copyeditor Pamela Marshall waved her magic wand over the manuscript, while Graphic Designer Dianne Lewis used fairy dust to create the book in a twinkle and a flitter.

Included in the book are directions to the two featured locations, Sabattus Mountain and Arethusa Falls. Both are easily accessible for young hikers who might experience some magical moments while exploring.

Leigh and Solana will have The Giant’s Shower available to buy for $16.99 and be autographed on Thursday, August 15. It is also available at Bridgton Books, Hayes Ace Hardware, Fly Away Farm, or by contacting the author:thegiantsshower2023@gmail.com.
