Writing Group

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)

Amazing themes for our stories this month! Can you put them together? use them separately? Your choice.

REJUVENATION: becoming young again, finding new energy, recovering your love of creative play, fostering new growth.

ADORNMENT: Decoration, and much more. Do we care how we look? Do we wear certain clothes or jewelry items because they carry personal meaning? What do you wear to a protest march? What make the world we see beautiful?

Come play with these themes in whatever narrative way you like, online on Wednesday, May 21, 1:00-2:30 EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) for information or the zoom link.

Join us for a Pride Month Movie Double-Feature!

We’ll start the evening off with Love, Simon (2018) (rated PG-13 with a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes):
Simon is a closeted high schooler who falls for an anonymous online pen pal from his school who is also gay. When a blackmailer obtains his candid e-mails, Simon must decide how to reveal his sexuality to his friends and family while attempting to turn his online flirtation into a real-life romance.

Love, Simon will be immediately followed by Pride (2014)(rated R with a 2 hour running time). An unlikely friendship is forged between a small community of striking miners in Wales and a team of London-based gay-and-lesbian activists who help fight their cause. With no end to the strike in sight, the urban activists venture into the countryside to deliver their donation in person, and find they have more in common with the people of this struggling community than anyone on either side could have expected.

Come for one or stay for both! Everyone is welcome!

Aging in Maine: AARP Presents: Fraud Prevention

People of all ages are taken advantage of through scams and fraud everyday. We need to work together to slow the growth of that number, and equip people with the necessary resources to better spot a scam so they can avoid becoming the next victim.

We want to help all Mainers learn how to defend themselves against fraud attempts, which is why these discussions are open to all Mainers, not just AARP members.

Join us to celebrate the launch of Scott’s newest book of poetry, Above the Fold. (FMI and to order HERE). Poetry, discussion, and light refreshments provided. Everyone is welcome!

Scott Ruescher has been spending time in Oxford County since the 1980s, when he married into a family with a summer house in Stoneham. He has been writing poems about the power of place for many years—some set in his native Central Ohio and his adopted Eastern Massachusetts, others in Appalachia, the Deep South, England, and various parts of Latin America. His 2017 book, Waiting for the Light to Change, made scant mention of Northern New England, but his new one, Above the Fold, includes at least one long poem set in Oxford County. His new poem about the Western Maine legacy of painter Marsden Hartley can be found in The Lantern, the online magazine of the Colby Museum of Art.

Description:

Learn how to exercise properly for weight loss, muscle toning, increased energy and stamina. Weight loss can be difficult to navigate, mainly due to conflicting voices, methods, and opinions in the health industry. In this exercise class, you will learn which exercises to do, to maximize your results while minimizing the risk of injury. 1:1 private training can be expensive, while large classes can be difficult for people to learn. Small group personal training is the best of both worlds, as its less expensive than 1:1 training, while still maintaining the boutique feeling of personal training sessions. Come ready to exercise!

Panel Discussion: Gender-Affirming Healthcare

Join Julian Dormitzer, NP, Christine Caulfield, a long-time volunteer with Maine Transgender Network, Margo Rubero, gender-nonconformist and advocate for gender-affirming healthcare, and Candice McElroy, MD to learn more about this often misunderstood topic.

Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth. The interventions help transgender people align various aspects of their lives — emotional, interpersonal, and biological — with their gender identity. As noted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), that identity can run anywhere along a continuum that includes man, woman, a combination of those, neither of those, and fluid.

The interventions fall along a continuum as well, from counseling to changes in social expression to medications (such as hormone therapy).

“The goal is not treatment, but to listen to the individual and build understanding — to create an environment of safety in which emotions, questions, and concerns can be explored,” says Rafferty, lead author of a policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on gender-affirming care.

What's a War Story? Some of us have stories about things that happened in actual wars, ancient or modern, or folktales about soldiers. We might also think of very localized "wars" -- within a family, a group, a town. Or that kind of "war story" that is, as Merriam Webster puts it, "a story of a memorable personal experience typically involving an element of danger, hardship, or adventure." Come with all your war-story memories and tales, to tell or to listen!

Page Turners Book Discussion

Page Turners Book Discussion

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. Our reading list for the spring has changed somewhat. Our April 14 selection will now be Kazuo Ishiguro’s masterpiece The Remains of the Day, in which the quiet story of a road trip undertaken by the elderly butler of Darlington Hall brilliantly opens out both to the history of England during the rise of fascism and world war and to a personal story of unrealized love.

On May 5 we will turn to Samantha Harvey’s lyrical and Booker Prizewinning short novel Orbital (2024), which focuses on six characters orbiting the earth in a space station. In June we revisit eighteenth-century Scotland through Sir Walter Scott’s novel Waverley (1814). We are currently meeting on Zoom but often hold hybrid gatherings in the warm season.

Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and preliminary discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list.
