Page Turners Book Discussion

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. On June 9 we will be discussing Waverley (1814), Sir Walter Scott’s famous novel about the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland in 1745 as “Bonnie Prince Charlie” sought to restore the Stuart lineage to the British throne. Our July selection is Fire Exit (2024), the debut novel by Morgan Talty, the Maine Penobscot author of Night of the Living Rez.

Page Turners maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and preliminary discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. We are currently meeting on Zoom, but we will be holding hybrid gatherings in the summer.

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

HOBBS STORY SWAP IS "LETTING GO"

In June, that is. On Wednesday, June 18, from 1:00-2:30 EDT the Story Swap will be exchanging tales about LETTING GO -- loosening our hold on something long retained, letting go of a relationship or of a grief, of a child turned adult, or simply of the heaps of Stuff that have accumulated in our lives and are weighing us down. What have you released from your grasp, and what was the result?

Come and tell or listen at our monthly online gathering. This is our last meeting before the summer break -- hope to see you! Contact Jo at jradner@american.edu for the zoom link.

Join us for a Pride Month Movie Double-Feature!

We’ll start the evening off with Love, Simon (2018) (rated PG-13 with a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes):
Simon is a closeted high schooler who falls for an anonymous online pen pal from his school who is also gay. When a blackmailer obtains his candid e-mails, Simon must decide how to reveal his sexuality to his friends and family while attempting to turn his online flirtation into a real-life romance.

Love, Simon will be immediately followed by Pride (2014)(rated R with a 2 hour running time). An unlikely friendship is forged between a small community of striking miners in Wales and a team of London-based gay-and-lesbian activists who help fight their cause. With no end to the strike in sight, the urban activists venture into the countryside to deliver their donation in person, and find they have more in common with the people of this struggling community than anyone on either side could have expected.

Come for one or stay for both! Everyone is welcome!

We want to help all Mainers learn how to defend themselves against fraud attempts, which is why these discussions are open to all Mainers, not just AARP members.

Weight loss can be difficult to navigate, mainly due to conflicting voices, methods, and opinions in the health industry. In this exercise class, you will learn which exercises to do, to maximize your results while minimizing the risk of injury. 1:1 private training can be expensive, while large classes can be difficult for people to learn. Small group personal training is the best of both worlds, as its less expensive than 1:1 training, while still maintaining the boutique feeling of personal training sessions. Come ready to exercise!

We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

Writing Group

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)

Writing Group

Writing Group

  • Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library (map)

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)

Amazing themes for our stories this month! Can you put them together? use them separately? Your choice.

REJUVENATION: becoming young again, finding new energy, recovering your love of creative play, fostering new growth.

ADORNMENT: Decoration, and much more. Do we care how we look? Do we wear certain clothes or jewelry items because they carry personal meaning? What do you wear to a protest march? What make the world we see beautiful?

Come play with these themes in whatever narrative way you like, online on Wednesday, May 21, 1:00-2:30 EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) for information or the zoom link.
