Writing Group

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

We will be discussing Virginia Woolf’s modernist classic The Waves (1931), the most experimental and most lyrical of her novels. In this slide/lecture program, we will take an ecological look at Autumn in the North Woods.  Our adventure begins at the summit of Mount Washington, where man has been able to adapt in order to survive some of the most severe weather ever recorded.  We'll then descend into the forest and valley below to take a closer look at some of the wildlife that calls New Hampshire home, as well as an overview of the spectacular fall colors.  What strategies are adopted to survive the drastic changes in New England's seasons, and how birds, mammals, and plants are shaped by this northern environment will be some of the questions answered.  The Mount Washington Valley provides the scenic backdrop as we take this fascinating closer look at Autumn. The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

As paper mills shuttered in north central Maine, conservationists started planning to transform former timberlands into a national park. Philanthropist Roxanne Quimby, inspired by Percival Baxter’s acquisition of timber tracts early in the 20 th century to create Baxter State Park, acquired and donated to the United States in 2016 over 87,500 acres of land. President Obama then used the authority of the Antiquities Act to establish Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, protecting the remarkable flora, fauna, geology, history, night sky, and undeveloped watershed surrounding the East Branch of the Penobscot River adjacent to Baxter State Park. The national monument offers educational, recreational, and inspirational opportunities for enjoying the best of Maine’s North Woods. Learn more about this story, and how you can enjoy the national monument and its new Tekαkαpimək Visitor Contact Station.. Held in Hobbs Library Community Room. Registration preferred.

Writing Group

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Learn how to exercise properly for weight loss, muscle toning, increased energy and stamina. Weight loss can be difficult to navigate, mainly due to conflicting voices, methods, and opinions in the health industry. In this exercise class, you will learn which exercises to do, to maximize your results while minimizing the risk of injury. 1:1 private training can be expensive, while large classes can be difficult for people to learn. Small group personal training is the best of both worlds, as its less expensive than 1:1 training, while still maintaining the boutique feeling of personal training sessions. Come ready to exercise!

Page Turners Book Discussion

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. Our August meeting will focus on three short stories by American women: Kate Chopin’s “Story of an Hour”; (1894), Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s “The Revolt of Mother”; (1890), and Susan Glaspell’s “A Jury of Her Peers”; (1917). These classic stories open up fascinating questions about women and marriage at the turn of the twentieth century, especially in rural America, and about the short story form that dominated the popular press from the late nineteenth century until the 1970s. This will be a hybrid gathering on Zoom and in the library’s community room.

Lost on a Mountain in Maine tells the inspiring true story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler, who becomes separated from his family by a fast moving storm atop a treacherous mountain. For nine days Donn fights to stay alive as he attempts to survive the unforgiving wilderness of northern Maine without food, proper clothing, or the knowledge of how bad his situation really is. His disappearance sparks a massive search effort that captures national headlines and attracts hundreds of volunteers, including his own father who fears he may never see his son again.
