In November we will be reading two plays that set the stage for exploring the history of colonialism and enslavement in the Americas. The first is Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest (1611-1612); the second is A Tempest, written in 1969 by the French Caribbean poet Aimé Césaire (1913-2008). Césaire called his play an “adaptation for a Black theatre,” and its obvious purposes are to expose and disrupt the colonial project that underwrites the original. Shakespeare’s play is of course widely available; those interested in reading Césaire’s play in either English or French may request a copy from Sue Lanser.
Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, at which you can receive advance background information and preparatory discussion questions. If you would like further information about this group, please contact Sue Lanser at lanser@brandeis.edu or 925-6244.
