All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group. This month we will be discussing Dorothy West’s The Wedding (1995), a novel set on Martha’s Vineyard and focusing on race, family, and social class in the island’s African-American community during the 1950s. For August, we look back at a famous train crash by way of Emma Donohue’s page-turner novel, The Paris Express (2025). Our July meeting will be hybrid if circumstances permit; in August we will definitely meet both in the Library’s Community Room and on Zoom.
Page Turners welcomes new members maintains a discussion list through which members receive background information and discussion questions for each book selection. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like to learn more about the group or wish to join our mailing list. With occasional exceptions, we meet on the second Monday of each month.

Septic Systems in the Shoreland Zone
A Proposal to Protect Kezar Lake — Public Meeting Invitation
The Kezar Lake Watershed Association, together with FB Environmental Associates and soil scientist David Rocque, invites all Lovell residents to a public meeting to discuss a proposed Shoreland Septic Ordinance designed to protect one of our town's greatest treasures: Kezar Lake and its upstream ponds.
Kezar Lake's exceptional water quality is the foundation of our community. It supports the recreation our families enjoy, sustains local businesses, and underpins shoreline property values that generate roughly 70% of Lovell's tax revenue. Protecting that water quality protects all of us — on the lake and off.
The proposed ordinance is a common-sense, preventive measure. Septic systems have a typical lifespan of 20 to 40 years, and when older systems quietly fail, phosphorus and other contaminants can reach the lake — feeding the kind of algae and cyanobacteria blooms that have harmed lakes elsewhere in New England. The ordinance ensures that the roughly 600 properties within 250 feet of the lake and its ponds have septic systems that are working properly and well maintained, through periodic visual assessments, pumping every five years, and inspections for older systems.
The approach is straightforward and affordable. Costs are covered by user fees rather than town taxes, compliance costs for homeowners are modest, and the program rolls out gradually over four years. Many lake communities across Maine, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania have had to adopt proposals like this to protect their lakes.
This is your opportunity to learn about the proposal, ask questions, give input, and share your perspective. Whether you live on the lake, nearby, or elsewhere in town, your voice matters. Please join us — together we can keep Kezar Lake clean, healthy, and thriving for generations to come.

The Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention (MCEAP) has developed a presentation titled Elder Abuse: A Community Problem with Community Solutions to raise awareness of the serious problem of elder abuse. MCEAP’s goal for this presentation is to provide an overview of the issue of elder abuse including statistics, general information about the different types of elder abuse, and where to go for help. Although the presentation includes information about the many valuable resources that are available in Maine to help those who are affected by elder abuse, it does not provide profession-specific content or information about legal reporting mandates.

Thirty-five years after the infamous Fall River ax murders, a 61-year-old Irish woman, working in her kitchen in Anaconda, Montana, opens a newspaper to read about the death of the alleged murderer, Lizzie Borden. The woman is Bridget Sullivan, the Borden’s former maid.
As she reads the article, Bridget shares with the audience her rage toward her former employer’s daughter, whom she believes attempted to frame her for the murders. She has been haunted by a recurring, mysterious dream that begins with lace curtains and believes she was a witness, but that she has blocked the memory.
Drinking heavily, she shares with us what she remembers of that fateful day: how, in spite of being sick with food poisoning on the hottest day of the year, Mrs. Borden had still ordered her to wash all the windows in the house.
As she speaks, Bridget is stretching lace curtains on blocking frames. The frames have small pins around the edges for attaching the lace, and Bridget, in her anger, keeps pricking her fingers and staining the margins with blood.
After the trial, Lizzie sent Bridget a substantial amount of money, with the condition that she leave the US and return permanently to Ireland. Bridget believes Lizzie must have seen her face at the window, and that the offer was an attempt to buy her silence. Bridget brags about returning under another name to Anaconda, Montana, a prosperous mining town run by Irish immigrants.
Declaring that Lizzie was a “tommy” (a lesbian), Bridget accuses her of courting her with kindness, in an attempt to set her up for the murders. Bridget’s childhood with fourteen siblings was a harsh one, and, wanting to escape her mother’s fate, she has emigrated with a dream of having an independent life.
Holding up a frame of lace, she is surprised by the sudden retrieval of a memory from the day of the murders. Approaching the parlor window, she did not witness the murder, but saw instead the reflection of her own face, resembling the face of her mother. This memory triggers a string of other memories that contradict her version of events for that day. Increasingly confused, Bridget begins to realize the true identity of the murderer and understand that the woman she has demonized for thirty-five years nearly sacrificed her life in order to save Bridget.

Bio:
My name is Dan Lyons, and I'm a career personal trainer and exercise physiologist. I've been the owner of a personal training business in Boston for the past 15 years, specializing in weight loss and muscle toning. I recently moved to Maine, and am looking to connect with the community and teach people the easiest and best way to lose weight, tone up and improve their energy. I've helped 3000+ clients of all ages to see results and reach their goals, and I am excited to connect with new people in Maine. My youngest client is 7 years old, and my oldest client is 97 years old. No matter what your age is, I can help you with your goals! I specialize in metabolism, energy pathways, and balancing hormones through exercise to reach optimal health and fitness no matter what your age is.
In this last meeting before its summer break, the Hobbs Story Swap will play with the themes VACATING and VACATION.
VACATING? think of running away from something or someplace; emptying a home or an attic; or any other kind of emptying. And VACATION? often the scene of delights or disasters that make engaging stories – or maybe a tale of hope for refreshment in another place, fulfilled or not. How about a traveling adventure, a challenge on alien turf, or a threat that made you VACATE in a hurry!
Take one theme or another (or feel free to ignore both) – just come and tell and/or listen and celebrate the onset of summer. We will meet online on Wednesday, June 24, at a new time: from 2:00-3:30 pm EDT. Contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu) FMI or for the zoom link.
Join this group of friendly fiber artists as they work on their projects, help others, and visit on a weekly basis. It is a great place to get help, begin a new craft and get ideas for new projects. Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Study Room.
Come join us as we move together, linking breath with movement to cultivate strength, flexibility, and balance. While often flow-inspired, classes may vary in style and pace. Modifications are provided, and all levels are welcome. Suggested donation: $5–$25 (pay what you can or pay it forward).
Every Wednesday morning, library volunteers can help with your basic questions: “How do I use Zoom?” or “How do I log on to my library account on the library website?” or “How do I forward photos from my phone?” 9-10:30am or by appointment. Please call 925-3177 FMI or to schedule an appointment.

Description:
Learn how to exercise properly for weight loss, muscle toning, increased energy and stamina. Weight loss can be difficult to navigate, mainly due to conflicting voices, methods, and opinions in the health industry. In this exercise class, you will learn which exercises to do, to maximize your results while minimizing the risk of injury. 1:1 private training can be expensive, while large classes can be difficult for people to learn. Small group personal training is the best of both worlds, as its less expensive than 1:1 training, while still maintaining the boutique feeling of personal training sessions. Come ready to exercise!
