All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join the Page Turners, the Library’s afternoon book discussion group. On June 14, we will discuss Abdi Nor Iftin’s memoir, Call Me American (2018), a stirring narrative of Iftin’s experiences of war, famine, and struggle in his native Somalia, of his emigration to the United States, and of his adjustment to a new life in Maine. Iftin, who currently lives in Yarmouth, is the featured speaker for the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library’s annual meeting on June 23. Extra copies of Call Me American are available at the Library for this occasion.
Our selection for July 12 will be Maria Edgeworth’s Harrington (1817), the first English novel to take up the issue of English antisemitism, written by a widely acclaimed contemporary of Jane Austen. Harrington is available in paperback but can also be downloaded at no charge in both Kindle and HTML formats from Project Gutenberg. On August 9, we will read Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning Hamnet: A Novel of the Plague (2020).
Our June meeting will take place wholly on zoom, but in July we hope to try a “hybrid” model for meeting both online and in person. Please consult the July newsletter for details.
