3. Giving Securities

Gifts of stock or other securities such as mutual funds or bonds are welcome at any time and may create tax savings in some cases. By making gifts of appreciated securities (as opposed to selling the securities first and then donating the proceeds), it is possible to avoid paying capital gains tax and you can take the full market value as a charitable deduction.

The simplest way to give securities is by direct transfer—your broker electronically delivers your securities through DTC to Merrill Lynch, which is authorized to accept gifts for the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library endowment:

  1. Prior to transfer, please contact the library to confirm the gift, either by email to CHML.Support@HobbsLibrary.org, or call the Library at 207-925-3177 and Library staff will put you in touch with the Board President or Treasurer. This alert is critical! It is the only way the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library will know who the donor is.

  2. Your broker makes the DTC stock transfer to:
    Merrill Lynch DTC #8862
    Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library
    Acct. # _______________________
(for this number, please contact Bruce Munger at Merrill Lynch:
    Tel: 508-798-7240, Fax: 508-525-4509)

  3. Your broker must then notify Bruce Munger at Merrill Lynch about the assets that will be transferred. For example: “I am sending (number) of shares of (kind of stock) and I want it to go to the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library’s (annual appeal or endowment fund). The donor is (name) (mailing address).”

Government Securities and Mutual Funds are also eligible. Please contact Bruce Munger at 508-798-7240 to discuss proper transfer methods.
