Writing Group

The CHML Writing Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 1 to 2:30pm. It is a friendly group for all styles and types of writing. Some write poetry, some short stories, others memoirs, diaries, novels or plays. Each week a different member leads the group. We begin with a writing quote to get us going, then share what we each are working on. The leader chooses the focus of the day, be it setting, point of view, idioms, etc. We often follow a writing prompt then spend time free writing. Those who wish may share a piece of writing. We inspire and learn from each other as we read what we are working on. Feel free to join this fun and welcoming group in the community room downstairs in the library.

If you would like to attend by Zoom, please email thedesk@hobbslibrary.org in advance so that the Zoom meeting may be launched.

Writing Group members’ blogs:

Tips, Tantrums and Tea- humorous stories, real solutions and moments of joy as I learn about the challenges of dementia (written by Susan Clout)

Robert W Spencer- a writer wandering in time (written by Robert Spencer)

Page Turners Book Discussion

Page Turners Book Discussion

All patrons and friends of the Charlotte Hobbs Memorial Library are welcome to join Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group, which meets at 1:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. Currently we are meeting on Zoom. At our May meeting, we will be discussing the anonymous novel The Woman of Colour,. published in 1808 and featuring a biracial heroine who travels from Jamaica to England to fulfill the terms of her father’s will by marrying her cousin. A page-turner with Gothic overtones and a frank inquiry into British racial politics, this recently rediscovered work sheds new light both on the abolitionist era and on novels by Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë that also feature Caribbean women in complicated plots. Copies of The Woman of Colour are available for purchase, new or used; the novel can also be read online in a pdf version. In June we will conclude our series on eighteenth-century literature by taking up three short works by Jane Austen: her early novel Lady Susan, the abandoned The Watsons, and the first chapters of Sanditon, left unfinished at Austen's death and also featuring a “woman of colour.”

Page Turners maintains a discussion list for our members, through which you can receive advance background information and preparatory discussion questions. Please contact Sue Lanser (925-6244 or lanser@brandeis.edu) if you would like further information about the group or wish to join our mailing list.

Hobbs Story Swap

“CLEANING” WITH THE HOBBS STORY SWAP

Well, it’s spring, and that’s one kind of “cleaning,” and it would fit the Story Swap’s May theme. Think about all the curious and nostalgic discoveries we make when we dig into home maintenance a bit more deeply than usual! But there’s also winning (“cleaning up”), repenting (spiritual cleanup), and just getting unwanted stuff out of our house, our lives, or our minds. Find your own cleaning stories, and come and share them online on Monday, May 20, from 1:00-2:30 pm EDT. Listeners and tellers all welcome. FMI or for the Zoom link, contact Jo Radner (jradner@american.edu).

Panel Presentation: Gender-Affirming Healthcare

Join Dr. Brock Libby of Maine Health as well as the parent of two transgender children to learn more about this often misunderstood topic.

Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth. The interventions help transgender people align various aspects of their lives — emotional, interpersonal, and biological — with their gender identity. As noted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), that identity can run anywhere along a continuum that includes man, woman, a combination of those, neither of those, and fluid.

The interventions fall along a continuum as well, from counseling to changes in social expression to medications (such as hormone therapy). For children in particular, the timing of the interventions is based on several factors, including cognitive and physical development as well as parental consent. Surgery, including to reduce a person’s Adam’s Apple, or to align their chest or genitalia with their gender identity, is rarely provided to people under 18.

“The goal is not treatment, but to listen to the child and build understanding — to create an environment of safety in which emotions, questions, and concerns can be explored,” says Rafferty, lead author of a policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on gender-affirming care.

Speaker Series: Terry Martin (Zoom & In-person)

Author Terry Martin, a Registered Nurse originally from Rumford Maine, grew up grateful for the paper mill that dominated the economy of her hometown. It was only years later that, working as a nurse with her physician husband, they came to realize that the smoke and toxic chemicals billowing from the mill’s stacks were causing the sky-high rates of cancer and lung disease in her community. And Poison Fell from the Sky is a chronicle of her firsthand experience in sounding the alarm and her decades-long fight to expose the devil’s bargain the community had struck with the mill, a fight that continued even after her husband fell victim to cancer.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga with Barefoot Nichole is an all levels, very accessible practice.  Yin yoga moves beyond the muscles to target fascia and connective tissue, where we tend to hold resistance and rigidity. Yin  is a passive and meditative practice focusing on relaxation through the use of props for support.  Poses are held for 3-5 minutes to encourage more flexibility and mobility in your body. Great for beginners as well as advanced students. Suggested donation is $5-$25.

Writing Group
